Garage Rock Radio Podcast 11 - over 400 listens!

Thanks to everyone who has listened to our Garage Rock Radio Podcast 11 over at Mixcloud! It now has 431 listens; Double the number from a month ago. People are still going to Mixcloud to check it out. Garage Rock lives on in 2012!

People like the Garage Pop sound of the first track by William Penn and His Pals. They dig the fuzz of the next two tracks, probably produced by the owner of the lead guitar amp sticking a screwdriver through the speaker to get that intense overdriven fuzz sound without having to buy a fuzzbox!

I went crazy with the Psychedelic tracks on this podcast! Six heavy trippy crazy tracks with all kinds of vocal styles and powerful guitar solos. One track is even by The Grateful Dead, recorded BEFORE their first album. I'm going to put another Grateful Dead track on my next podcast!


Like I said last post, I like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Rihanna and Adele as much as the next person - but sometimes you gotta try something new and COMPLETELY Different! It's going to be cool to watch Madonna doing the half time show at the Super Bowl this weekend, I'm a Madonna fan too. But I also love obscure 60s Garage Rock, Runk, Indie and Psychedelic music, so I make these really cool podcasts to feature that kind of music.

Garage Rock Radio podcast 11 doing well!

It's been just one week since the latest Garage Rock Radio podcast, number 11, hit the interwebs. We're happy to report that listens on Mixcloud are going well! Almost 200 listens so far and a lot of new "followers".

I'm listening to the podcast right now! I think this one is a good mix of 60s Garage Rock in all its lo-fi glory, new high quality Garage / Indie Rock tunes, and fuzzy Gothic Psychedelic 60s tunes with some extended guitar solos. Included in the Psychedelic portion of the show is a very early recording by The Grateful Dead, right after they changed from The Warlocks! That is followed by a trippy dirge with spacey guitar during the verses followed by piercing fuzz riffs during the TWO extended guitar breaks! Lyrics to "Song of a Sinner" which the vocalist is singing to God:

The Morning Dew

Great Original Garage Tock Band from the 60s!

The Morning Dew was a very successful rock band from Topeka, Kansas during the 1966 to 1971. The band toured through-out the Mid-West and was one of the hottest psychedelic bands of the era.

Have a listen to a GREAT Garage Rock song, "No More" by The Morning Dew, recorded in April 1967. Gotta love the Scream and the awesome fuzz guitar solo at 1:22

Back to the 60's...

In August 1969 the band recorded an album in New York City. This very cool psychedelic double track is from that effort. It is "Epic the Mann / Death is a Dream" - check it out!

Watch It Sparkle EP

Watch It Sparkle is a Punk / Trash / Garage Rock band from Seattle Washington. This three piece band features Justin Mellow on guitar and vocals, Steb on bass and Starr on drums. All three play their instruments with passion and passable competence. Here is a review of their new 4-song EP. The band will be supporting it with a West Coast tour in March (Show Schedule here) and a full length album titled "Leave Me to Dream" is due to be released later this year.

1. My Baby Has a Red Tooth - This song starts off with power cords and pounding drums, soon augmented by keyboards. Vocals come in starting with a frantic "uhhhhh" followed by the punk verses and chorus. The vocals are a bit low in the mix but this is a guitar song so it's fine.

2. Your Heart Will Throb Hard - This song also starts with power chords but more in a Garage form. It also features keyboard similar to what you hear on the first B-52s album. Again the vocals are punky but a little stronger than track 1. The first 4 seconds is nearly "Fireflies" by Owl City, then its straight into great Garage guitar and drums. It has cool Garage backing vocals and the song ends with a scream. This is my favorite song and sounds to me like a cross between "Do It Clean" by Echo and the Bunnymen, and "Planet Claire" by the B-52s.

3. It's a Kill - Strong guitar and drums song with a vocal style similar to the first 2 tracks.

4. Hokey Cokey - Starts off like Wooly Bully - but then the pace doubles and we're in punk-o-mania! This song should have any listener pogoing around their room. The lyrics are based on the Hokey Pokey and sung in the same frantic style as the others.

This is a solid punk / rock EP with some Garage and New Wave influences. If you like Garage, you may like this as well. Have a listen to some of the songs at the band's MySpace page. Buy the CD at CD Baby.

The LSD Enigma

Our friend Darren, from McFadden's parachute (MP3s at GRRR) is writing and performing new Garage Rock songs in the band "The LSD Enigma." Darren is one member of this duo and the other is Dave from The Riviera Playboys. Darren has uploaded 15 videos of The LSD Enigma on his YouTube channel.

Check out this song called Merry Go Round. It has great Garage Rock guitar chords (Dave, harmonica too) and drumming (Darren), along with cool singing by Dave and Darren.

The first video is a live version recorded Live At Geno's In Portland, Maine on Janury 29, 2010. The second video is the same song filmed as they were recording it in the studio. The Legendary Gentlemen - In Your Face! - CD Review

The Legendary Gentlemen - In Your Face!

If you don't know the 1966 Garage Rock classic, "It's a Cry'n Shame," then you don't know Garage! Considered one of the best examples of raw 60s Garage Punk, this song by The Gentlemen from Dallas Texas has always been one of my favorite songs. I was very happy to hear that several of the original Gentlemen were back together and out with a new CD using the name "The Legendary Gentlemen." I am pleased to have a copy of that CD and here are my thoughts about it.

First, some general thoughts, then a track by track commentary. When The Gentlemen recorded "It's a Cry'n Shame" in 2 takes back in 1966, they were all in their mid teens. The song is very raw and unprocessed. It drips with fuzz, has amazing vocals, and the backbeat stomps like a herd of elephants. If I were to make a music video of this song, I would have the guys in black leather jackets, riding motorcycles down the highway. I would have them arrive at a 1960s discotheque filled with wild dancing, much like the Pigeon Toed Orange Peel sequence in "Coogan's Bluff." The chainsaw guitar break would be playing over a fight scene, like in the Frankie and Annette Beach movies. This song rips through your brain and leaves you bruised and battered. If you aren't up and jumping around like a maniac when you are listening to it with the amps turned up to 11, you better check your pulse cuz you might be dead!

This CD starts with a brand new version of "Cry'n Shame" which is much more polished but still kicks butt! The original track and this track are both great in their own way. Anyone who knows the original will want to hear the new version.

Now here's a track by track review of the CD.
Go buy this, you will love it!


1. Cry'n Shame - A remake of The Gentlemen's classic garage rocker. Since the original is perfection, there is no way to match it. But this latest incarnation is pretty close! The famous riff is intact, with slightly less buzzsaw fuzz. The guitar break is different but almost as good. The drums are much higher in the mix than they were in the original. Like most Garage tunes, they were buried deep in the mix in the original. The higher frequencies in the original consisted mainly of harmonics from the overdriven guitar but in the new mix we hear the various drum cymbals. Vocals are great in the new version, comparable to the original. The backing vocals are nearly identical, but a little too low in volume, while the lead is clearer but equally powerful. The new version is better produced and mixed, but in losing some of the rawness, it sounds a little like it is being covered by ZZ Top in the 80s. Of course that's not a bad thing, ZZ Top were Great! I saw them live in the early 70s. The point is, this is a different version, but it still ROCKS and you will LOVE IT!

2. Action Woman - This EXCELLENT remake sounded as good or better than the original. There is a nice balance in all the frequency ranges and the song retains its 60s garage punk power.

3. Daughter - A funky rocker that sounds reminiscent of something Peter Framptom might have done in the mid 70s. Very nice guitarwork here. A spoken outro that reminds one of the spoken intro to "The Number of the Beast" by Iron Maiden.

4. You Ain't Tuff - Driving garage rocker with nice guitarwork.

5. Fight Fire - A garage favorite of mine, this song was done by the pre-CCR Golliwogs. A faithful cover with a fuzzy guitar break that is VERY satisfying!

6. I Tell No Lies - Great garage rocker featuring organ over a cool chord progression.

7. All Night Stand - Nice garage pop with a good long dueling guitar break.

8. Baby Get On Home - A funky dance rocker with a live party vibe.

9. Have Love Will Travel - Very nice version of this Garage Classic.

10. That's The Way - Rocker with a very nice guitar break, reminds one of Carlos Santana.

11. Five Tears Ahead - Faithful reproduction of this garage psyche classic by The Third Bardo.

12. I Hear You Knockin' - Nice remake of this 50s classic with a cool organ break and harmonica flourishes. Almost sounds like New Country by the end.

13. Too Many People - Good version of a Garage classic.

14. Shake, Shake, Shake - Cool version of this dance rocker.

15. My Little Girl - Uptempo blues rocker with a cool riff.

16. The Sub Prime Blues - Straightforward gritty blues tune with a contemporary lyrical theme. Very tasty guitarwork.

17. Too Cheap - Pop rock chorus with a funky chorus that reminds one of the Archies or Josie and the Pussycats. Evolves into an Allman Brothers sounding tune.

The Heartbeats - 60s Girl Garage Band

On September 7th, 1968, The Heartbeats, from Lubbock Texas, won $10,000 in prizes in the amateur band contest on ABC's nationwide pop/rock show Happening '68. The Heartbeats lip-sync'ed to their recording of the Outsiders hit "Time Won't Let Me." One of the prizes was a VW bus, but none of the girls could drive; they were 12 to 15 years old!

The Heartbeats are:
Linda Sanders - Drums, lead vocals
Deb Sanders -rhythm guitar
Deborah McMillan - bass
Jeannie Foster - lead guitar and organ

Managed by mom Jeanne Sanders, whose goal was to "maintain in appearance and reality a group of decent, wholesome girls."

Here they are, as seen on Happening '68. Linda is on drums in the back. Jeannie is on the left. Deb is in the middle and "has a dance routine" which is very cool! Deborah is on the right. After 8 bars of lead-in, during which the guitar girls do shuffle, they get a little more animated as Deb does her "dance routine." Check out the cut-aways to kids in the audience. This is a great slice of Garage Rock for your viewing and listening pleasure!

The Eleventh Story

The Eleventh Story is a 60s Garage influenced band out of Virginia with a new album available at CD Baby called "Outland Road". The band consists of Tom Haun on guitars and vocals, and Todd Rosedale on bass. They present 7 songs on this CD which has Garage, Blues and Psychedelic influences.

"Snake Doctor" brings to mind the 60s pop rock of Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR). "One Good Reason" is a slower blues/psyche number. "Our Time Is Now" is one of my favorite tracks. It is a Garage Rocker with a Psychedelic feel. The guitar riff is cool and Tom's vocals are trippy yet powerful. I also like "That's What I'm Here For" which is another obviously 60s Garage influenced tune. It has a light breezy feel, nice Garage pop tune! "And For Today" gets a little more gritty, and stays in a slow groove. "Out To The Highway" picks up the pace, it rocks and has tasty fuzz lead guitarwork! "Tsunami" ends the set. It's another Garage Rocker with lead fuzz.

In general, Tom's vocals are excellent and the guitar work is solid. I did notice that there is the occasional loss of sync among the instruments, and the songs seem to end abruptly. But this is a very nice Garage CD that I would recommend to all Garage Rockers!
