Thanks to everyone who has listened to our Garage Rock Radio Podcast 11 over at Mixcloud! It now has 431 listens; Double the number from a month ago. People are still going to Mixcloud to check it out. Garage Rock lives on in 2012!

People like the Garage Pop sound of the first track by William Penn and His Pals. They dig the fuzz of the next two tracks, probably produced by the owner of the lead guitar amp sticking a screwdriver through the speaker to get that intense overdriven fuzz sound without having to buy a fuzzbox!

Garage lives on in the 21st century and people dig the two modern tracks by Lyn Price and The Cons. You can find more music by Lyn on our Record Label website, and read more about The Cons here.

I went crazy with the Psychedelic tracks on this podcast! Six heavy trippy crazy tracks with all kinds of vocal styles and powerful guitar solos. One track is even by The Grateful Dead, recorded BEFORE their first album. I'm going to put another Grateful Dead track on my next podcast!

Like I said last post, I like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Rihanna and Adele as much as the next person - but sometimes you gotta try something new and COMPLETELY Different! It's going to be cool to watch Madonna doing the half time show at the Super Bowl this weekend, I'm a Madonna fan too. But I also love obscure 60s Garage Rock, Runk, Indie and Psychedelic music, so I make these really cool podcasts to feature that kind of music.

It's been just one week since the latest Garage Rock Radio podcast, number 11, hit the interwebs. We're happy to report that listens on Mixcloud are going well! Almost 200 listens so far and a lot of new "followers".

I'm listening to the podcast right now! I think this one is a good mix of 60s Garage Rock in all its lo-fi glory, new high quality Garage / Indie Rock tunes, and fuzzy Gothic Psychedelic 60s tunes with some extended guitar solos. Included in the Psychedelic portion of the show is a very early recording by The Grateful Dead, right after they changed from The Warlocks! That is followed by a trippy dirge with spacey guitar during the verses followed by piercing fuzz riffs during the TWO extended guitar breaks! Lyrics to "Song of a Sinner" which the vocalist is singing to God:

Great Original Garage Tock Band from the 60s!

The Morning Dew was a very successful rock band from Topeka, Kansas during the 1966 to 1971. The band toured through-out the Mid-West and was one of the hottest psychedelic bands of the era.

Have a listen to a GREAT Garage Rock song, "No More" by The Morning Dew, recorded in April 1967. Gotta love the Scream and the awesome fuzz guitar solo at 1:22

Formed in 2009 in a small town (Bergamo) close to Milan, the KAAMS are a trio influenced by 60s garage bands and by the rawest R'n'B sound.
Former members are Carmi (vocals, guitar and harmonica), Conte (drums) and Mafe (bass).
They released an Ep “She’s a Killer” - 2010 on Bedo Records (IT) / Dirty Water Digit Records and a 7” split “Choose your coffin” - 2010 on Boss Hoss Records (IT) / distributed by Area Pirata (IT).

Dublin natives Cheap Freaks have been making a stir since they started just over a year ago. Churning out a blissful blend a fuzzed up garage rock with some heavy psych. In their short while together they’ve opened for acts like the Buzzcocks, Black Angels and Jay Reatard and a in recent times a successful tour of Germany has opened many doors in Europe for the band. Fronted by both former Things bassist Robbie Brady and former DC Pakt guitarist Al Dodd their debut 'Play Four Songs' 7" EP was released last year and is available to buy from US label Big Neck Records www.bigneckrecords.com. Their follow up EP 'Teenage Brains' will be released on the bands own Psycho Sound Records and will be available this month on CD and itunes download. To follow will be their debut album and European tour in May 2011. More details on that real soon!

FIRST ANNUAL POWER POP-A-LICIOUS! MUSIC FEST

The first Power Pop-A-Licious music festival will take place on Saturday April 30th & Sunday May 1st at the legendary rock club Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ. Conceived and curated by power pop legend Paul Collins (cofounder of THE NERVES, THE BREAKAWAYS and THE BEAT) the fest will bring together some of the finest young guitar-driven power pop, garage rock and punk-pop bands from across the U.S. and Canada. Power Pop-A-Licious is a unifying rally cry for this thriving rock-n-roll subculture, and is a means for power pop fans of all ages to discover a wealth of talented new music acts in one power-packed weekend.
Collins explains the concept behind the festival, "I was touring all over the country with my Beat Army Tours, when it hit me, I gotta bring all these great bands I'm playing with together for one crazy weekend!"

This all-ages event is ground zero for a burgeoning DIY power pop scene that's been fueled by the immediacy of the Internet, the devotion of its fans, and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Each day will feature bands from different regions of the country, with local DJs spinning sets to create an all-day dance party atmosphere. Similar in approach to “happenings” in 1960's London, Power Pop-A-Licious is no mere rock n’ roll concert, it’s an event. Garage Rockers! Here's a video I just found on YouTube. This song is our kind of music!!! They use Vox equipment and 60s harmonies to create this groovy tune and excellent video. If you like The Dandy Warhols, Brian Jonestown Massacre and similar indie bands then you will love this band and this particular song!

I don't know anything about the group and a quick Google search found nothing except they may be from San Francisco. This song came out in 2007 so who knows if they are even around. All we have is this video and this page on OurStage:

Beg Borrow and Steal

In 1965, a bunch of kids from Ohio were in a band that released the amazing Garage Rock classic, Beg Borrow and Steal, under the name of The Rare Breed and Ohio Express.

In 2008, two of these kids released a YouTube video on their BegBorrowAndSteal channel of them performing their song.

Here are three videos of this awesome tune. The first is a video of what sounds like the 45 single, most likely in mono. The seond is someone playing the Stereo Album version, with a cool locomotive intro. The third is of the original "kids" who recorded it, from 2008.

You can download an MP3 of the song from our site. It was recorded from the Mod Monday 60s Radio Show on WNYU in NY in 1983 on a portable radio with a built-in cassette recorder. You can hear the DJ's voiceover at the end:

These are two of the original band who recorded Beg Borrow and Steal. It was released under names Rare Breed and Ohio Express. This is NOT a cover. People who recorded this record were: John Freno, Barry Stolnick, Alexander "Botts" Norbit, Joel Feigenbaum and Tony Cambria. The record did not sell when released under the "Attack" label, but sold about a half a million copies under "Cameo Parkway". THE VAGABONDS
The Vagabonds are a Dublin based 4-piece punk-rock band. However, they transcend the mediocrity of the indulgent, egotistical and nepotistic ways, some of their better known peers are renowned for. They drive through the political and social landscape of their songs with little care for who may take offence along the way, if this band offend you; you don't understand. The Vagabonds have no time for bigots, racists and homophobes, if you are any of these things you should not listen to this band. Connected Magazine has called "a refreshing blend of tuneful punk melodies with grimy garage riffs to create a totally infectious sound" and renowned Limerick DJ, Alan Jaques, has refered to them as "Bob Dylan fronting The Clash". The band go into the studio in early June to record their debut single with Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur, Babyshambles) with a release pencilled in for September.

Girls Names
Formed in January 2009 with their first gig booked before even playing together, Belfast 's Girls Names unabashedly hark back to the early/mid eighties shadow world of Beat Happening, Black Tambourine, Felt, C86 and the Sound of Young Scotland. In their short existence they have quickly honed their craft in creating their own self-styled “disposable noise pop”, masking subdued bittersweet vocals and melodic hooks with reverb drenched guitars and Mary Chain primal drums. Having sold out of their debut home taped demos on Cass/Flick (Belfast) last summer and after a string of support slots with the likes of Sic Alps, Wavves, Times New Viking, Lovvers and Gary War, Girls Names are set for their first release 'proper', with a 12" EP on Brooklyn’s much talked about Captured Tracks label and a full UK tour with label buddies, La La Vasquez in the spring. Expect more releases in the upcoming months through Cass/Flick and Tough Love Records ( London ) and a debut album in the offing before the year is out.

BATS
Formed in 2006 by complex molecules, BATS have been dispersing their audio seed throughout Ireland and the rest of Europe with fervent vigour. Watch It Sparkle EP

Watch It Sparkle is a Punk / Trash / Garage Rock band from Seattle Washington. This three piece band features Justin Mellow on guitar and vocals, Steb on bass and Starr on drums. All three play their instruments with passion and passable competence. Here is a review of their new 4-song EP. The band will be supporting it with a West Coast tour in March (Show Schedule here) and a full length album titled "Leave Me to Dream" is due to be released later this year.

1. My Baby Has a Red Tooth - This song starts off with power cords and pounding drums, soon augmented by keyboards. Vocals come in starting with a frantic "uhhhhh" followed by the punk verses and chorus. The vocals are a bit low in the mix but this is a guitar song so it's fine.

2. Your Heart Will Throb Hard - This song also starts with power chords but more in a Garage form. It also features keyboard similar to what you hear on the first B-52s album. Again the vocals are punky but a little stronger than track 1. The first 4 seconds is nearly "Fireflies" by Owl City, then its straight into great Garage guitar and drums. It has cool Garage backing vocals and the song ends with a scream. This is my favorite song and sounds to me like a cross between "Do It Clean" by Echo and the Bunnymen, and "Planet Claire" by the B-52s.

3. It's a Kill - Strong guitar and drums song with a vocal style similar to the first 2 tracks.

4. Hokey Cokey - Starts off like Wooly Bully - but then the pace doubles and we're in punk-o-mania! This song should have any listener pogoing around their room. The lyrics are based on the Hokey Pokey and sung in the same frantic style as the others.

This is a solid punk / rock EP with some Garage and New Wave influences. If you like Garage, you may like this as well. Have a listen to some of the songs at the band's MySpace page. Buy the CD at CD Baby.

The LSD Enigma

Our friend Darren, from McFadden's parachute (MP3s at GRRR) is writing and performing new Garage Rock songs in the band "The LSD Enigma." Darren is one member of this duo and the other is Dave from The Riviera Playboys. Darren has uploaded 15 videos of The LSD Enigma on his YouTube channel.

Check out this song called Merry Go Round. It has great Garage Rock guitar chords (Dave, harmonica too) and drumming (Darren), along with cool singing by Dave and Darren.

The first video is a live version recorded Live At Geno's In Portland, Maine on Janury 29, 2010. The second video is the same song filmed as they were recording it in the studio. The Legendary Gentlemen - In Your Face!

If you don't know the 1966 Garage Rock classic, "It's a Cry'n Shame," then you don't know Garage! Considered one of the best examples of raw 60s Garage Punk, this song by The Gentlemen from Dallas Texas has always been one of my favorite songs. I was very happy to hear that several of the original Gentlemen were back together and out with a new CD using the name "The Legendary Gentlemen." I am pleased to have a copy of that CD and here are my thoughts about it.

First, some general thoughts, then a track by track commentary. When The Gentlemen recorded "It's a Cry'n Shame" in 2 takes back in 1966, they were all in their mid teens. The song is very raw and unprocessed. It drips with fuzz, has amazing vocals, and the backbeat stomps like a herd of elephants. If I were to make a music video of this song, I would have the guys in black leather jackets, riding motorcycles down the highway. I would have them arrive at a 1960s discotheque filled with wild dancing, much like the Pigeon Toed Orange Peel sequence in "Coogan's Bluff." The chainsaw guitar break would be playing over a fight scene, like in the Frankie and Annette Beach movies. This song rips through your brain and leaves you bruised and battered. If you aren't up and jumping around like a maniac when you are listening to it with the amps turned up to 11, you better check your pulse cuz you might be dead!

This CD starts with a brand new version of "Cry'n Shame" which is much more polished but still kicks butt! The original track and this track are both great in their own way. Anyone who knows the original will want to hear the new version.

Now here's a track by track review of the CD.
Go buy this, you will love it!

1. Cry'n Shame - A remake of The Gentlemen's classic garage rocker. Since the original is perfection, there is no way to match it. But this latest incarnation is pretty close! The famous riff is intact, with slightly less buzzsaw fuzz. The guitar break is different but almost as good. The drums are much higher in the mix than they were in the original. Like most Garage tunes, they were buried deep in the mix in the original. The higher frequencies in the original consisted mainly of harmonics from the overdriven guitar but in the new mix we hear the various drum cymbals. Vocals are great in the new version, comparable to the original. The backing vocals are nearly identical, but a little too low in volume, while the lead is clearer but equally powerful. The new version is better produced and mixed, but in losing some of the rawness, it sounds a little like it is being covered by ZZ Top in the 80s. Of course that's not a bad thing, ZZ Top were Great! I saw them live in the early 70s. The point is, this is a different version, but it still ROCKS and you will LOVE IT!

2. Action Woman - This EXCELLENT remake sounded as good or better than the original. There is a nice balance in all the frequency ranges and the song retains its 60s garage punk power.

3. Daughter - A funky rocker that sounds reminiscent of something Peter Framptom might have done in the mid 70s. Very nice guitarwork here. A spoken outro that reminds one of the spoken intro to "The Number of the Beast" by Iron Maiden.

4. You Ain't Tuff - Driving garage rocker with nice guitarwork.

5. Fight Fire - A garage favorite of mine, this song was done by the pre-CCR Golliwogs. A faithful cover with a fuzzy guitar break that is VERY satisfying!

6. I Tell No Lies - Great garage rocker featuring organ over a cool chord progression.

7. All Night Stand - Nice garage pop with a good long dueling guitar break.

8. Baby Get On Home - A funky dance rocker with a live party vibe.

9. Have Love Will Travel - Very nice version of this Garage Classic.

10. That's The Way - Rocker with a very nice guitar break, reminds one of Carlos Santana.

11. Five Tears Ahead - Faithful reproduction of this garage psyche classic by The Third Bardo.

12. I Hear You Knockin' - Nice remake of this 50s classic with a cool organ break and harmonica flourishes. Almost sounds like New Country by the end.

13. Too Many People - Good version of a Garage classic.

14. Shake, Shake, Shake - Cool version of this dance rocker.

15. My Little Girl - Uptempo blues rocker with a cool riff.

16. The Sub Prime Blues - Straightforward gritty blues tune with a contemporary lyrical theme. Very tasty guitarwork.

17. Too Cheap - Pop rock chorus with a funky chorus that reminds one of the Archies or Josie and the Pussycats. Evolves into an Allman Brothers sounding tune.

Brimstone Howl - New album, free MP3

I just received this announcement in my email today. It reports that Garage Rockers Brimstone Howl have released a new full length album and the new song "Suicide Blues" is available as a free download.

"Suicide Blues" starts off with a conventional Garage drum and guitar riff. Then when the gritty vocals come in, with another layer of guitar, one hears a Velvet Underground influence. At about the 1:20 mark, lead guitar comes squealing and howling, an overdriven delight. The guitar break is repeated twice more, at one minute intervals. The final lead guitar break rips with such maniacal buzzing and screaming intensity that it reminds one of accidentally getting the neighbor's cat nicked by your weed whacker! Brand new album by Lincoln, NE’s favorite garage sons, Brimstone Howl. This time the gang went to Costa Mesa, CA, to record Big Deal. What's He Done Lately? (the title references a quote from Johnny Ramone about Phil Spector) at The Distillery under the guidance of engineer/producer Mike McHugh (known to produce some of the most heinous, blown-out sounds this side of the galaxy, including Black Lips, Jon Spencer and Andre Williams). The result is considerably more fuzzed than their previous work with Detroit producer Jim Diamond but still pummels.

Frontman John Ziegler admits that Big Deal is thematically “a little brighter” than previous efforts, but also explains, “While our last record We Came In Peace sounded ‘big,’ the main characteristic of this album is its heat. Analog from start to finish. Recorded to tape. Mixed to tape. And from tape the wax was cut. This record sounds ‘hot’.”

The new album - Brimstone Howl’s third for Alive Records - finds a couple of older songs (such as “Elation” and “M60” rerecorded from their debut album and first 45) riding shotgun with newer explosive tracks such as “Last Time,” “Everybody Else Is Having Fun,” “Iota Man” and “Suicide Blues.” “Musically, our instincts remain the same as always,” Ziegler states, “but we do more pop sounding things at times, with as much drama as we can fit into our rock'n'roll template. I get the feeling that's out of style or going out, even within our own little community of garage folks, but we're from the Midwest and we can't f**k around and waste our time singing songs that aren't fully sincere. We’ve been doing music for it's own sake for a long time now, none of us have made rent money from this, for whatever that's worth. We have music in our hearts, goddamn it, and we always will. That will always remain the most important thing in this industry, and whatever corner of it we inhabit."

A Twilight Taste Of Indigo - Tom Haun

Tom Haun is out with a new CD entitled "A Twilight Taste Of Indigo." The disc holds 8 tracks all between 3 and 5 minutes in length. Instrumentation includes rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass guitar and drums. All 8 tracks have a similar 1960s slow rock / blues / folk vibe so if you like one track you will most likely enjoy them all.

Tom has a smooth vocal style that occasionally reminds one of Neil Young or maybe Roky Erikson performing slower 13th Floor Elevators tunes (like "Baby Blue"). The lyrics are interesting and well written. The guitars are crisp and clear while the drums provide a rock solid backbeat.

For me, the stand out track is "Silent Saturday" which reminds me of "For You" by The Sugar Twins, even using the words "for you" in the chorus. This is a pop rock song with a nice beat. The CD ends with a cool instrumental named "East Coast/West" that grooves nicely.

If you're a fan of slow to mid tempo folk rock and blues 60s inspired tunes, you'll like this offering from Tom Haun.

The Heartbeats - 60s Girl Garage Band

On September 7th, 1968, The Heartbeats, from Lubbock Texas, won $10,000 in prizes in the amateur band contest on ABC's nationwide pop/rock show Happening '68. The Heartbeats lip-sync'ed to their recording of the Outsiders hit "Time Won't Let Me." One of the prizes was a VW bus, but none of the girls could drive; they were 12 to 15 years old!

The Heartbeats are:
Linda Sanders - Drums, lead vocals
Deb Sanders -rhythm guitar
Deborah McMillan - bass
Jeannie Foster - lead guitar and organ

Managed by mom Jeanne Sanders, whose goal was to "maintain in appearance and reality a group of decent, wholesome girls."

Here they are, as seen on Happening '68. Linda is on drums in the back. Jeannie is on the left. Deb is in the middle and "has a dance routine" which is very cool! Deborah is on the right. After 8 bars of lead-in, during which the guitar girls do shuffle, they get a little more animated as Deb does her "dance routine." Check out the cut-aways to kids in the audience. This is a great slice of Garage Rock for your viewing and listening pleasure!

The Eleventh Story

The Eleventh Story is a 60s Garage influenced band out of Virginia with a new album available at CD Baby called "Outland Road". The band consists of Tom Haun on guitars and vocals, and Todd Rosedale on bass. They present 7 songs on this CD which has Garage, Blues and Psychedelic influences.

"Snake Doctor" brings to mind the 60s pop rock of Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR). "One Good Reason" is a slower blues/psyche number. "Our Time Is Now" is one of my favorite tracks. It is a Garage Rocker with a Psychedelic feel. The guitar riff is cool and Tom's vocals are trippy yet powerful. I also like "That's What I'm Here For" which is another obviously 60s Garage influenced tune. It has a light breezy feel, nice Garage pop tune! "And For Today" gets a little more gritty, and stays in a slow groove. "Out To The Highway" picks up the pace, it rocks and has tasty fuzz lead guitarwork! "Tsunami" ends the set. It's another Garage Rocker with lead fuzz.

In general, Tom's vocals are excellent and the guitar work is solid. I did notice that there is the occasional loss of sync among the instruments, and the songs seem to end abruptly. But this is a very nice Garage CD that I would recommend to all Garage Rockers!

The Good Rats, and Kars4Kids

I grew up on Long Island in the 70s, so naturally I saw The Good Rats play around town many times. I saw them at the local clubs, I saw them at Eisenhower Park, and I saw them play with The Ramones at the Nassau Coliseum. Everyone who grew up in the NY area knows The Good Rats! They were a hard rocking guitar based band whose songs had excellent hooks. My two favorite Rats tunes are - "Reason To Kill" and "Writing The Pages." When I got this email recently, I knew I had to pass it along to you all!

Kars4Kids Launches Jingle Contest with Spokesman Peppi Marchello of The Good Rats

Classic Rock Hall of Famer Jumpstarts National Car Donation YouTube-Based Contest

Lakewood, NJ—July 27, 2009—Kars4Kids, the national car donation program best known for its persistent "1-8-7-7-Kars-for-Kids" jingle, opened the doors this morning to contestants who want to perform, recreate or otherwise spoof their well-known jingle. The contest was launched simultaneously at the charity organization's website and its YouTube channel with a video--the first of three in a series--from famed rock-and-roll songwriter Peppi Marchello and his band The Good Rats.

"While Kars4Kids is a wonderful organization, we know our jingle can make some people a little crazy," said Clifford Meth, VP of Communications. "It's no different than Burger King's 'Have It Your Way' campaign of the 70s or some of the other classic commercials--our jingle gets inside people's heads and sometimes they can't get it out. So we thought we'd give the thousands of people who write about our jingle a chance to change it… or spoof it… or recreate it. And who better to kick that off than Peppi Marchello, one of the very best songwriters and rock-and-roll showmen of the 1970s."

Kars4kids is giving away prizes from Fender Stratocasters to gaming and home theatre systems. While the organization may not change their jingle any time soon, they believe this contest will be fun for everyone.

"Asking me to be spokesman for a national charity? Now that’s a gutsy move," says Marchello, whose band first debuted on Warner Brothers Records in 1969 and has sold more than one million albums. "When we were playing the Uncle Floyd Show or opening for The Grateful Dead, we must've gone through six dozen vehicles. If Kars4Kids had been around, I'd have known what to do with them but instead I'm still getting notices for 30-year-old parking tickets!"

In addition to writing for and fronting The Good Rats, Marchello also produced a number of other artists including Fiona Flanagan (Atlantic Records) and scored Demi Moore's film "No Small Affair" (1984)

"This contest isn't just for musicians or people good with a video camera," notes Meth. "Anyone with a little creativity will have a chance of winning." Meth noted that other professional bands and entertainers will be popping up at the contest site, including J.R. (formerly of the punk-horror band Rosemary's Babies) and Mark Radice, the Emmy-nominated writer for such shows as "Sesame Street."

Bill Kline, owner of Garage Rock Radio Records, has always been a fan of 1960s music and was thrilled to discover that thousands of small bands with regional hits were being unearthed in the 70s. "When the famous ‘Nuggets’ album was released, I was familiar with the Electric Prunes, Seeds, Castaways, and 13th Floor Elevators but it was great to become aware of other groups like the Leaves, Chocolate Watchband and Nazz, making powerful songs, all hoping to be the next ‘Beatles‘" said Kline. He then became a collector of compilation albums such as the Pebbles series, which continued to bring obscure 1960s Garage songs back from the dead.

Many fans of Garage Rock went on to start their own bands that played Garage cover songs and original tunes inspired by the original 1960s Garage bands. All of these bands have genuine 1960s rock sounds, and all were getting airplay on free form radio stations like WFMU near New York City. Here is my review of our recent release on Garage Rock Radio Records - "Dark, Dirty & Anonymous" by Lynne (Lyndsey) Price, available NOW at Amazon.com, iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody and others.

"Lynne Price, who now goes by the name of Lyndsey Price, is a powerful and passionate singer! This album features some Dance and Techno songs she recorded a few years back, along with 4 Garage Rock tunes she recorded more recently. 'Losing Control' is a cool Techno/Trance song. 'Wiped Out' and 'NYC Wild Girl' are excellent Dance tunes that remind me of the 70s/80s band Siouxsie & the Banshees. 'Ponyride Thrills' is sensuous and showcases Lyn's excellent vocal range.

I love Garage Rock and Lyndsey gives us 4 great Garage Rockers on this album! 'Garage Rock Radio' was created to be the theme song for the 1960s podcasts over at GarageRockRadio.com. It's only a minute long, but what a powerful and rockin' tune! Perfect for promoting a 1960s radio show! 'Someday' is a cover of a 1966 Garage Rock classic. It is produced much better than the original 60s tune but retains the raw power and 60s sound of the original, with its swirling organ parts. Lyndsey's voice is strong, gritty and a little punky on this one, just as it is on all of her Garage songs. 'The Way I Feel About You' is a cover of Pete Best's classic single and is one of my favorite 60s tunes. Lyndsey does an amazing job on this one too! Finally, we have a cover of 'Come And Give Your Love To Me' that really makes you want to get up and dance! Lyndsey's voice soars above the fuzz guitar on this Garage Pop rocker.

My advice is to buy the entire album. I rated it 5 stars and I listen to it often. Try it, you'll love it!"

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

Many people think the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is about an LSD trip. It may actually be true, but the inspiration for the song came to John Lennon when his son Julian brought home a drawing from school and told his father, "That's Lucy in the sky with diamonds." Julian was about 4 years old at the time and had drawn a picture of his friend, Lucy. As it turns out, there really was a "Lucy" and her name is Lucy Vodden.

The AP has just reported that Lucy Vodden is suffering from Lupus, and was recently contacted by Julian who wanted to help. Read this article in USA Today for the rest of the story.

I first heard of McFadden's Parachute about 7 years ago. Bill Kelly played their song "Fall Of The Queen" on his Teenage Wasteland show on WFMU. I loved it and made it my Song Of The Week for 03/23/03 on my website GarageRockRadio.com. I began writing to the band's leader, "Dagwood," and started buying their albums. I have 5 so far.

McFadden's Parachute plays Garage Punk songs and Psychedelic Rock that sounds like it was recorded back in 1966 and 1967, at the height of the Garage Rock and Psychedelic scenes. Each song features cool guitar, often fuzzed out, with pounding drums and Dagwood's gritty vocals. Many songs also contain Farfisa organ which is something I love about Garage Rock music.

The songs are generally short, although some of the Psychedelic tunes such as the three on this Greatest Hits collection - Laughing Sparrow Died, Silver Days And Purple Nights, and Wishes Of A Peasant clock in at around 5 minutes. Every song has hooks that will get stuck in your head!

60s Garage at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame

Here is an essay written by our good friend Lynne (Lyndsey) Price, about Garage Rock, in support of the exhibit at the RnR Hall of Fame. Enjoy!

The advent of 60's Garage and the role it played in the lives of teenagers.

Before the 1950's and Elvis Presley, one thing was certain. There was no such creature as a "teenager". Children stayed in school or dropped out and went into the army. Women got married and set up family life.

After World War II, a president named Franklin Delano Roosevelt set up the G.I. Bill, enabling returning soldiers to go to college, get a decent education and earn their share of the American Dream. A man named Mr. Levitt established a development of 3 bedroom homes in Long Island. These homes would have garages and basements were now called recreation rooms. Levittown became a symbol of what was to be the "new emerging Middle Class". Children of this era enjoyed beautiful toys with outer space themes, Barbie Dolls, A large Doll called Patty Playpal and TV shows like Bozo the Clown, The Little Rascals, and in the Midwest, the Mulcane's and Kiddy-A -Go-Go. When people became putting away their toys, they picked up musical instruments. A Farisa Organ with a slight horror movie sound, loud drums, and best of all, guitars went electric. Plug them in and BOOM - loud, raunchy, and scratchy. Rehearsals took place in garages and parties in the rec rooms. You now had your block party band, your church picnic band and school lunchtime band to keep kids out of trouble. This era was a relatively good one, with drive in theatres, an ice cream palour named Carvel's that had a space age design on their buildings as well as their treats. The local drugstore was now a place to hangout - eat banana splits and read comic books, not to mention socialize. A teenager was considered too young to marry and was expected to get the same education that their father had and do even better financially. The future had hope. 1960's Garage actually spans from about 1959-1971 and includes the following genres: Psychedelic, R & B, Motown, DooWop, British Invasion,Blues and emphasized boy- girl relationships with the notion that "someday" we will marry. A girl was expected to stay chaste and women's lib was unheard of. In terms of music, there was a lot of radio, "sock hops", shows at the beach, amusement parks, and theatres. Dancing was at it's peak. Candy bars at the local supermarket were large and nonfat was unheard of. It was an era of pleasure. Jockeys and radio stations:
From New York: MurraytheK (Murray Kaufman) from 1010 WINS, NY
From New York: WMCA Good Guys - one being Dan Ingram
From New York: WABC with Cousin Bruce Morrow - or Cousin Brucie
All over Jockeys were spreading the great music that was now being played on the Ed Sullivan Show, and Rock and Roll shows were coming up from all over. American Bandstand - with Dick Clark - would be the #1 Statue of Dedication to the new generation called "teenagers" who, after school, went there to dance in Philadelphia and eventually California or New York. A great show called "Soul Train" - the Motown version of American Bandstand, had a fantastic station at the end of the dial called WBLS. It was one heck of an era.

And this could be one heck of an exhibit. You would have people coming in from all over. It's something good that many, many Garage Rock fans and acts would love to have and somehow contribute to. The advent of 1960's Garage has once again circled the globe. There must be a reason.

The hundreds of groups and fans in the USA alone, not to mention around the world, would be very happy knowing this exhibit is bringing back "Happy Days". We need "Happy Days". Please consider then why this era is returning.

I did go to their MySpace page. They have 6 songs posted, all very cool Garage Rockers tinged with The Blues. Their use of keyboards/organ produces an authentic '60s sound. The production is good and the vocals are strong. Song 1, "I Feel Alright," starts off slow but then raves up into high energy. Song 5, "Pass Me By," is the most Garage-y track and is my favorite.

New Garage/Punk/Metal bands on YouTube

Hi, Garage Rockers!

I've recently come across three great rock bands on YouTube. One is an all girl French band that has a heavy 60s Garage influence. The second is a Dutch band that sounds genuinely 60s and the third is a group of youngsters from Wales that play powerful Garage Metal. Please have a look at the videos I've embedded in this post. Then visit the linked websites to hear their songs and for more info about the bands.

The Plastiscines are four young ladies from France who recently released a cool 60s Garage influenced CD called LP1. According to this from Spin.com:

Parisians Katty Besnard (vocals/guitar), Marine Neuilly (guitar), Louise Basilien (bass), and Zazie Tavitian (drums) formed Plastiscines in 2005. Signed to Virgin France, and distributed by the Caroline imprint in the U.S., the band released LP1 last month. With Alixe currently manning the sticks -- founding member Zazie and recent drummer Caroline have since departed -- the teenagers from the City of Light are currently touring Europe.

Their MySpace page has 4 great songs on it, and lists their influences:

Alkalay is a rock band from Merthyr, Wales with 6 members - 2 girls and 4 guys. These young people play powerful yet melodic alt metal with nice guitar skills and contrasting angelic/scream vocals. According to the band's MySpace page:

Alkalay are a fun, up for anything,
alternative rock band from the South Wales valleys.
The band which consists of male and female vocalists,
are sure to become something special.
Originally forming in 2006, under the name
'My Favourite Accident', they started
to fully concentrate on the band a few months later.
With the line up changing quite a bit over that period of time,
but at long last we have the final band.

Tommy James Interview!

Every fan of 60s music knows that Tommy James and the Shondells had a string of hits including "Hanky Panky", "Mony Mony", "Crimson and Clover" and "Crystal Blue Persuasion." But the group had lesser known songs that fit into the "Garage" genre. Even though Tommy found success in the music business, he started off in an obscure Midwestern band called the Tornados. His early history is similar to many Garage bands. Listen to our interview with Tommy James and learn about how he got started. This will be of interest to Garage Rockers and to musicians of today who will be inspired by Tommy's story.

Tommy James hit the big time with the single "Hanky Panky" in 1966. But the song had been recorded in 1964! Listen to the interview to hear how Tommy had to scramble to capitalize on the sudden success of this record. The band quickly put together an album, also named "Hanky Panky." Two great Garage rocking songs from the album are featured in our interview podcast. The first is "Say I Am", an upbeat dance song that is in the same style as "Go Go Gorilla" (Shandells) and "Game of Love" (Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders). The other cool 60s Garage rocker is "Lots of Pretty Girls", a song with a great guitar solo that sounds a bit like "Hang on Sloopy" (McCoys).

Liar Liar, rap style?

Hello, music lovers! Many people consider "Liar Liar" by The Castaways to be one of the Best 1960s Garage Rock songs ever recorded. I've always loved the song and I was very happy to find a video of the song on YouTube. It's a clip from the movie "It's a Bikini World".

A few days ago, I watched a video on YouTube from somebody in the Netherlands. It consisted of a slideshow of pictures with three different snippets of songs as the soundtrack. The second song was a rap/hip-hop tune and I immediately recognized that they were sampling "Liar Liar." I searched the net to find what this could be. I found out on The Castaways Wikipedia page. Apparently,

A Dutch rap group called "the Opposites" sampled "Liar, Liar" in their 2007 hit single "Dom, Lomp & Famous".

I went back to YouTube and found a video of this song. I'm not a big rap fan but I do like some rap songs. This one is pretty cool! The lyrics are in Dutch but I'm pretty sure they are misogynistic and twisted, so please ignore the foul language and groove to the beat!

Once was at the WNYU Mod Monday dance at NYU in '84 or '85. The second time was at Reds in Levittown, Long Island, New York. They were great, and still are!

The Hi Fevers

I recently got a copy of the new CD from the Hi Fevers in the mail. Fege, the Hi Fever's guitarist and vocalist, sent me this CD all the way from Italy. I have known Fege for years, she used to be in the cool band, Queen Beee. I wrote about them on GarageRockRadio in the 4/14/2004 entry near the bottom of the page, here.

This six-song CD is guitar and drum based rock and roll. All tracks are 2 and 3 minutes in length. The songs show influences from Garage, Surf, Punk, and even Disco. The set starts out strong with the song "High Fever". Fege sings and one of the guys harmonize over power chords and standard rock drum beats. I imagine that this will be a crowd pleaser in live sets - I can see the fans pumping their fists and bobbing their heads in sync with the band.

Song two is "Leech". It's another strong rocker with punk influences. Next up is "Girl+". It starts out fast, with riffs borrowed from the Dead Kennedy's "Too Drunk to ****". This is a cool punker with go-go drums over the guitar break, and is probably my fave track. The last three songs are good rockers; one is an instrumental with surf stylings and the final track is a Disco-rocker slightly similar to the Kinks "Superman".

All in all, this is a good rocking CD! For more information on the Hi Fevers, check out their MySPace page.

Fuzztones and McFadden's Parachute

McFadden's Parachute and the Fuzztones are the two best Garage Rock bands around today. Both have been making fuzzy psychedelic 60s Garage Rock for years and both are in the news lately.

That's right folks - Big John Bates and the Voodoo
Dollz are back with a new CD and Tour!

After spending the summer working hard to get the new
CD "Take Your Medicine" released in North America, it
looks good for November in Canada through PHD
Distribution and Devil Sauce Recordings. The new CD
has gotten great reviews from major rock'n'roll and
punk media in Europe, where it was released by
Germany's Wolverine Records to coincide with a BJB
tour earlier this year. 'Take Your Medicine' contains
13 psycho/garage/blues tracks with a raw sound
captured by producer Todd Simko (Pure, Xavier Rudd).
It also breaks open some new sonic territory for the
band, building on the foundations started by their
earlier albums 'Flamethrower' and 'Mystiki'.

Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz just played
Vancouver with Los Straitjackets on their TWIST PARTY
tour (with the fabulous Pontani Sisters and guest
vocalist Kaiser George) and Sweet Soul Burlesque.
Happily that's not the last of this year's Vancouver
shows .... Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz will be
hosting their "It's Your Funeral" Halloween at the

it's true, Vancouver's getting rocked hard this

The BJB tour will feature Voodoo Dollz favourites

The sound is NOT CD quality; if you hear a song you like, it's probably on a CD compilation somewhere. My voice sounds better on this one because I'm now using a nice noise-cancelling mic. I also used a better quality version of my outro bed and I let it play for longer than I usually do. I've had requests to hear more of the outro song, so I let it go for about 90 seconds this time.

I first heard about this video site about 6 months ago and went there to look for Garage clips, but I didn't find any during a quick search. Garage Rock on TV

I was checking the stats for GRR last night and noticed that "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" by The Chocolate Watchband is at the top of the list of most downloaded MP3s. It's not surprising, since this song has been on TV a lot lately in an IBM Commercial. You can see the commercial at this German IBM site. Now the song in the commercial is the original version and is done by The Kinks. But the Chocolate Watchband did it Much Better! The vocals snarl more and the guitars are fuzzier. Have a listen on our MP3 page. You might think you're hearing The Rolling Stones, the singer for the Chocolate Watchband did sound like Mick Jagger.

Once, and only once, I recently saw a TV commercial for Target with "Shape of Things To Come" by "Max Frost and his Troopers", the theme song from 1968's "Garage Rock" movie, "Wild in the Streets". Click that last link to hear the song and read about the movie. There has been interest in the movie again lately, as stars Richard Prior and Shelley Winters have both passed recently. Garage Rockers will love the movie for its many songs which also include "Fourteen or Fight!" and "52 percent". Christopher Jones, as Max Frost, sings the title song mid-movie, just after some of his "troops" have been killed by the police. I think he gives a great, emotional performance. You can see the pain in his eyes. Check out this movie if you've never seen it before. It's on Encore from time to time and available for not much money as half of a double feature on DVD.

For a few weeks back in March I think it was, Subway ran a commercial for its new Ham and Swiss sub. "I Love My Honey, Ham and Swiss" was a catchy tune in the 1960s bubblegum mold. The tune sounded very familiar. At first, it sounded to me to be a cross between "Chewy Chewy" and "Sugar Sugar". Then I realized where they "borrowed it" from! This tune is very similar to 1963's "Killer Joe" by the "Rocky Fellers", a family group like the Cowsills. But this bunch was father and 4 sons. As this page points out, this song is derived from "Love is Strange". I'm sure if I sat here long enough, I could name a song that that one borrowed from. Although "Love is Strange" was fairly original, the guitar solo is amazing and often copied.

Several of the original Garage Bands were on TV in the 60's, maybe I should do a post about that! I'll just mention here that The Standells were on The Munsters! TV Land says it was episode 26. Here's the entry for The Standells on Wikipedia.

We recently received a cool EP CD from Michal Kahan entitled "Baby Escapo". It's 7 songs are loaded with Garage/Punk energy. The guitars are loud and fuzzy on most songs but there's a couple with organ. Michal sings in Spanish with enthusiasm and passion. Gear Fab Records is a company in Orlando Florida that has some great '60s and '70s Garage and Psychedelic music in it's catalog. They offer "reissues of the most incredible artifacts." I recently ordered a CD from the Majic Ship, a great Psyche-rock band from my old hometown of NYC. I also got 2 cool comps, Psychedelic States: Florida in the 60s Volume 3 featuring "It's Trash" - The Cavemen, "Baby" - The Tasmanians, "You Can't Make Me" - The Montells and Psychedelic Crown Jewels - Volume 2: Garage Unknowns with many cool Garagers, I highly recommend it! Whenever I'm in the office, which is quite a bit lately, I open up my WinAmp player and listen to Beyond the Beat Generation. This internet radio station is amazing!!! If you love Garage Rock, you should listen to this!

Queen Beees, Italian Garagers. Mainly in Italian web site about these cool 3 girl one guy rockers that remind me of the great 80s garage band, the Pandoras.
Mocker Monkeys, Italian Garagers. A cool garage/surf/psyche band! The site is mostly in English.

A great Garage Rock resource! Find a song if you just know part of the Title or Artist. Find out which compilations have a song. The Garage Compilation Database provides a web-interface for the data contained in Menachem Turchick's excellent Searchin' for Shakes database. It contains track listings and other information for hundreds of various artist compilations that focus on 60's garage and psychedelic rock.
