Garage Rock on AmieStreet

AmieStreet.com is a new website that uses a new system to sell music. All songs provided for sale by artists start off at a price of... FREE! As the song gets more and more downloads, the price goes up - but never to more than 98 cents.

Our friend and GarageRockRadio supporter, Lynette, has three songs for you to enjoy on AmieStreet. You will recognize the song "GarageRock" - it is our podcast's theme song! You will also recognize "Some Day" - it's a cover of The Resumes tune that we played in our very first podcast. Go to AmieStreet now and listen to all three songs; thanks!

      New Garage/Punk/Metal bands on YouTube

      Hi, Garage Rockers!

I've recently come across three great rock bands on YouTube. One is an all girl French band that has a heavy 60s Garage influence. The second is a Dutch band that sounds genuinely 60s and the third is a group of youngsters from Wales that play powerful Garage Metal. Please have a look at the videos I've embedded in this post. Then visit the linked websites to hear their songs and for more info about the bands.

The Plastiscines are four young ladies from France who recently released a cool 60s Garage influenced CD called LP1. According to this from Spin.com:

Parisians Katty Besnard (vocals/guitar), Marine Neuilly (guitar), Louise Basilien (bass), and Zazie Tavitian (drums) formed Plastiscines in 2005. Signed to Virgin France, and distributed by the Caroline imprint in the U.S., the band released LP1 last month. With Alixe currently manning the sticks -- founding member Zazie and recent drummer Caroline have since departed -- the teenagers from the City of Light are currently touring Europe.
Their MySpace page has 4 great songs on it, and lists their influences:

B-52's - Blondie - Ramones - The Kinks - Stooges - Libertines - Cramps - Buzzcocks - The Slits - kings of leon - The Strokes - Television - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - The Clash - White Stripes
Here's a great pop/punk tune by The Plastscines. It mixes "Eisiger Wind" by Liliput and "All Day and All of the Night" by the Kinks - late 70s post punk and 60s pop punk, a great combination!

Dutch band, The Frowns, recently posted about their new video on our Garage Rock NOW! website. Here, we'll watch another video by the band. It's a strong guitar rocker that features a cool 60s guitar riff, a nice guitar solo and 60s backing vocals. Learn more about The Frowns on their website, in Dutch.

Alkalay is a rock band from Merthyr, Wales with 6 members - 2 girls and 4 guys. These young people play powerful yet melodic alt metal with nice guitar skills and contrasting angelic/scream vocals. According to the band's MySpace page:

Alkalay are a fun, up for anything,
alternative rock band from the South Wales valleys.
The band which consists of male and female vocalists,
are sure to become something special.
Originally forming in 2006, under the name
      'My Favourite Accident', they started
to fully concentrate on the band a few months later.
With the line up changing quite a bit over that period of time,
but at long last we have the final band.
Visit their MySpace page to hear two excellent songs, "Michael Barrymore Vs The Great", and "Iron Angel." Here's a somewhat grainy video that at least gives the viewer a taste of what the band is like. They seem to be cool people!

The Quests Website and New CD

      Hello GarageRockers!

I recently got an email from The Quests - the 60s Garage Band who performed the song that I chose as the first song in my first GarageRockRadio Podcast.

The email announces the Quests' website: http://www.questsrock.com/index.cfm, and their new CD too!

      Here's the email:

Subject: "The Quests"announce www.questsrock.com a new website and new CD

      Dear Bill,

Hi, I'm Bob Fritzen, lead singer/songwriter of "The Quests." Still proud of the fact that "Scream Loud" was the lead off song of your 1'st podcast. Due to that honor, and other good vibes from old and new fans, we have recorded a new CD, RE-QUESTED: BACK TO THE GARAGE" which contain our old hits, previously unreleased songs recorded in the '60s, and five new '60s style songs written/recorded by the original members in 2007.

Wanted to let you know that we have also opened a website http://www.questsrock.com/ where these can be sampled and purchased. If you could list our URL after our name The Quests http://www.questsrock.com/, it would be greatly appreciated. Garagerockradio.com was one of the the most important site listed on our links. Check out our website and let me know what you think. We also have a 60sgaragebands.com interview coming out 2/18/08, hope you like it.

Once again, thanks for your help and interest in the past.

      Tommy James Interview!

Every fan of 60s music knows that Tommy James and the Shondells had a string of hits including "Hanky Panky", "Mony Mony", "Crimson and Clover" and "Crystal Blue Persuasion." But the group had lesser known songs that fit into the "Garage" genre. Even though Tommy found success in the music business, he started off in an obscure Midwestern band called the Tornados. His early history is similar to many Garage bands. Listen to our interview with Tommy James and learn about how he got started. This will be of interest to Garage Rockers and to musicians of today who will be inspired by Tommy's story.

Tommy James hit the big time with the single "Hanky Panky" in 1966. But the song had been recorded in 1964! Listen to the interview to hear how Tommy had to scramble to capitalize on the sudden success of this record. The band quickly put together an album, also named "Hanky Panky." Two great Garage rocking songs from the album are featured in our interview podcast. The first is "Say I Am", an upbeat dance song that is in the same style as "Go Go Gorilla" (Shandells) and "Game of Love" (Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders). The other cool 60s Garage rocker is "Lots of Pretty Girls", a song with a great guitar solo that sounds a bit like "Hang on Sloopy" (McCoys).

      Liar Liar, rap style?

Hello, music lovers! Many people consider "Liar Liar" by The Castaways to be one of the Best 1960s Garage Rock songs ever recorded. I've always loved the song and I was very happy to find a video of the song on YouTube. It's a clip from the movie "It's a Bikini World".

A few days ago, I watched a video on YouTube from somebody in the Netherlands. It consisted of a slideshow of pictures with three different snippets of songs as the soundtrack. The second song was a rap/hip-hop tune and I immediately recognized that they were sampling "Liar Liar." I searched the net to find what this could be. I found out on The Castaways Wikipedia page. Apparently,
A Dutch rap group called "the Opposites" sampled "Liar, Liar" in their 2007 hit single "Dom, Lomp & Famous".
I went back to YouTube and found a video of this song. I'm not a big rap fan but I do like some rap songs. This one is pretty cool! The lyrics are in Dutch but I'm pretty sure they are misogynistic and twisted, so please ignore the foul language and groove to the beat!

      1960s Garage Rock Lyrics - Podcast 1

Have you heard our very first podcast? It featured four great 1960s Garage Rock songs that you don't hear very often today, if at all! I would invite some of today's bands to cover these great tunes. To help the cause, I'll list the lyrics to the songs on our first podcast, as I hear them.

Scream Loud - The Quests (Visit their website)

If you really want me, yeah, scream loud, scream loud.

      Or I won't hear you, I'll
      never know you're there, I'll
      never realize that you may
      really care
and so, I'll say to you...

If you really want me, yeah, scream loud, scream loud.

For the words that you say may not
      come into my heart
I'll never know if we should
      really part
      and so before I go...

If you really want me, yeah, scream loud, scream loud.

      [Guitar Break]

Cuz if you really want me,
      tell the world you do!
I want them all to know our
      love can be true!
      And so before I go...

If you really want me, yeah, scream loud, scream loud.

      Or I won't hear you,
      I'll never know you're there,
I'll never realize that you may
      really care
and so, I'll say to you...

If you really want me, yeah, scream loud, scream loud.

      I Want you - Toni & Terri

Hey hey hey girl, take a look at me.
It's really hard I know, since you never saw me before.
You know what I want, I want you!

That don't matter none when you're young.
What do you expect me to do?
Get up and walk out with you?
You know what I want, I want you!

      Maybe you oughta walk away!
Why should I go, why cant I stay, no matter what the people say?
      Maybe you oughta walk away!
Why let em live your life for you, come on and do what you wanna do with me!

      [harmonia break]

Hey hey hey girl, you better start livin', yeah.
Its time you had some thoughts of your own.
Life's too short, the red tape's too long.

You dont have to be like everybody else, no.
I never met anyone like you.
And I'm tired of doin' everything other people do.
You know what I want babe, I want you!

I'm glad I listened to what you said.
Why should I go, why cant I stay, no matter what the people say?
I'm glad I listened to what you said.
Why let em live your life for you, come on and do what you wanna do with me!

      I want you!!!!
      Oh, I need you!
      I want you!!!!
      And I love you too!
      I want you!!!!
      And I'll be with you!
      I want you!!!!
      Oh, I want you!

      Some Day - The Resumes

Hey girl I wanna talk to you,
      I've got somethin' to say.
      I'm gonna be leavin' you,
      I may be back someday.

I'll do what I wanna do,
      I'll find a way,
      to keep on lovin' you
as I do today, as I do today, today, today!

I've got to keep moving on,
      don't ask me where.
      I'm travellin' all alone,
      you must beware.
Lord no, I gotta be gone,
      don't really care.
I'll stop in one o' those towns
where there's time to spare, there's time to spare, to spare, to spare! aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!

      [Extremely Cool Fuzz Guitar Break]

      I've cheated, I've run around,
      Lookin' for some pay.
I haven't any friends in town,
so I'll be on my way, my way, my way!

I'll stay in a cheap hotel,
      and earn my pay.
And when I'll pay my bill,
      I'll be on my way.

All of that will pay my friend,
      If I found a way.
      Divert the spell my friend,
So I'll get right someday, someday, someday!

Painted Air - The Remaining Few

Here I lie on my deathbed,
      Recalling things said,
      As my world slips away.

      A man stands over me,
      one final plea,
      though I disagree.

      Cars,
      daytime and light,
      running red light.
      Other drivers won't yield.

      People stand without sound,
      tears touch the ground,
      and soon dry away.

      The Hi Fevers

I recently got a copy of the new CD from the Hi Fevers in the mail. Fege, the Hi Fever's guitarist and vocalist, sent me this CD all the way from Italy. I have known Fege for years, she used to be in the cool band, Queen Beee. I wrote about them on GarageRockRadio in the 4/14/2004 entry near the bottom of the page, here.

This six-song CD is guitar and drum based rock and roll. All tracks are 2 and 3 minutes in length. The songs show influences from Garage, Surf, Punk, and even Disco. The set starts out strong with the song "High Fever". Fege sings and one of the guys harmonize over power chords and standard rock drum beats. I imagine that this will be a crowd pleaser in live sets - I can see the fans pumping their fists and bobbing their heads in sync with the band.

Song two is "Leech". It's another strong rocker with punk influences. Next up is "Girl+". It starts out fast, with riffs borrowed from the Dead Kennedy's "Too Drunk to ****". This is a cool punker with go-go drums over the guitar break, and is probably my fave track. The last three songs are good rockers; one is an instrumental with surf stylings and the final track is a Disco-rocker slightly similar to the Kinks "Superman".

All in all, this is a good rocking CD! For more information on the Hi Fevers, check out their MySPace page.

      Fuzztones and McFadden's Parachute

McFadden's Parachute and the Fuzztones are the two best Garage Rock bands around today. Both have been making fuzzy psychedelic 60s Garage Rock for years and both are in the news lately.

Here's a link to an article on McFadden's Parachute.

Here's the latest on the Fuzztones:
The February issue of the world's biggest rockzine, Rolling Stone,
contains a 12 track CD sampler, entitled (get this!)...."FUZZ TONES"! Even
cooler, the CD, which accompanies an article on 60's and 80's "Garage" bands,
features The Fuzztones' classic, "NINE MONTHS LATER," as well as tracks by the
Seeds, Count V, McCoys, Sonics, Paul Revere & The Raiders, and more!
      Check out the Fuzztones website.

      Garage Links, 2006, part 2

Here's a bunch of links I got by email in the second half of last year. I don't think I answered many of these directly. But I wanted to pass them all on so that everyone can check them out. If you see something here that you sent me, and it either changed or you'd like it removed, email me at infoATgaragerockradio.com and I'll comply. As for sending me something for airplay, I'm not a DJ and I don't have a radio show, I just write about them. Try writing to Bill Kelly over at WFMU, they play all kinds of new music. As for uploading songs to GarageRockRadio, we don't accept songs for upload. We choose the songs on our MP3 list at our own discretion.

Okay, here are the links. I haven't been to all of them so I can't vouch for them. Click at your own risk!

I jam in a band called King Arthur’s Court with Sky Sunlight Saxon from The Seeds and Djin Aquarian of Yahowha 13. We noticed your grand website and initiative to promote the history and music of Garage Rock. We have recently released an album called A Honeymoon with God and Family and we would love for you to check out some of our licks. The album’s vibe ranges from mellow shamanic, mid-tempo spirit reggae, to extended psych jams highlighted with Sky’s prophetic verses recorded in the same spirit of the “spontaneous” method Father Yod & Yahowha 13 used to produce 65 albums in a 2 year period in the 70s.

If you dig our music, we’d be more than happy to send you a few songs for your pod cast or a news feature on your site. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Oct. 25, 2006
      Media Contact: Tristan Risk
      More info: www.bigjohnbates.com
      ***************************************

That's right folks - Big John Bates and the Voodoo
Dollz are back with a new CD and Tour!

After spending the summer working hard to get the new
CD "Take Your Medicine" released in North America, it
looks good for November in Canada through PHD
Distribution and Devil Sauce Recordings. The new CD
has gotten great reviews from major rock'n'roll and
punk media in Europe, where it was released by
Germany's Wolverine Records to coincide with a BJB
tour earlier this year. 'Take Your Medicine' contains
      13 psycho/garage/blues tracks with a raw sound
captured by producer Todd Simko (Pure, Xavier Rudd).
It also breaks open some new sonic territory for the
band, building on the foundations started by their
      earlier albums 'Flamethrower' and 'Mystiki'.

Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz just played
Vancouver with Los Straitjackets on their TWIST PARTY
tour (with the fabulous Pontani Sisters and guest
vocalist Kaiser George) and Sweet Soul Burlesque.
Happily that's not the last of this year's Vancouver
shows .... Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz will be
hosting their "It's Your Funeral" Halloween at the
Media Club on October 28 with Nim Vid and the Starboys
      ... AND a tour-opening show at Richard's on Richards
November 16 with Southern Culture on the Skids. Yes,
it's true, Vancouver's getting rocked hard this
      fall.

The BJB tour will feature Voodoo Dollz favourites
Little Miss Risk (Sweet Soul Burlesque) and L'il
Luvroc (Taboo Revue) as well as debuting their new
drummer - JT Massacre (Real Mackenzies, JP5). The
tour crosses Western Canada to Winnipeg on Dec 1 and
follows the highways south through the American
Midwest until they are back on the coast on December
      16.

We'll send out another email when the dates are
confirmed but until then, check out the website at
http://www.bigjohnbates.com and the BJB profile on
      MySpace.

      GarageRockRadio Podcast, Volume 4

      Finally - Podcast 4!
Volume 4 has 4 songs on it and runs for 15 minutes and 14 seconds. It's just under 14 MB in size and is in MP3 format encoded at 128kb/second. The sound is NOT CD quality; if you hear a song you like, it's probably on a CD compilation somewhere. My voice sounds better on this one because I'm now using a nice noise-cancelling mic. I also used a better quality version of my outro bed and I let it play for longer than I usually do. I've had requests to hear more of the outro song, so I let it go for about 90 seconds this time.

Here are the songs in the Podcast:
It's The Same All Over The World - Squires
      Tears Tears - Decisions
Echoes - Lord And The Flies
You Are Your Only Mystery - Baroque Monthly

It's just under 12 MB in size and is in MP3 format encoded at 128kb/second. The sound is NOT CD quality; if you hear a song you like, it's probably on a CD compilation somewhere.

Here are the songs in the Podcast:

      GarageRockRadio Podcast, Volume 2

Here is the second episode of the GarageRockRadio podcast! It's about 14 MB in size and contains 4 songs, just like volume 1. The quality is about the same as the first one, certainly less than CD quality. Here are the 4 songs:

      Target Love - Apollos
      Shake Yourself Down - Checkerlads
      Get Away - Swingin' Lampliters
Please Don't Go - Fifth Row Bac

In between the 3rd and 4th song, I mention the Garage Rock videos that are on YouTube. See this post for the links:

      GarageRockRadio Podcast, Volume 1

I've been talking about doing a 1960's Garage Podcast for quite some time. Well, I've finally made one. It contains 4 cool 60s Garage tunes:

Scream Loud - Quests (Visit their website)
I Want You - Toni and Terri
      Some Day - Resumes
      Painted Air - Remaining Few

Thanks to everyone who emailed me a "station ID". You can do the same and I'll use it in the future. Just say, "I love Garage Rock Radio", or "This is xxx from xxx and I love Garage Rock Radio", or "This is xxxx from the band xxxx and you're listening to Garage Rock Radio", or something like that. You can use any mic and any recording program, even the Sound Recorded program that comes with Windows. Save it as a WAV file and email it to bill@garagerockradio.com and I'll use it in an upcoming podcast.

      GarageRockRadio podcasts

I've decided to create some Garage podcasts. My thought is to make something with just 3 to 5 songs per episode. I'll be playing nothing but 1960's Garage songs at first. Later, I may add a small sampling of DooWopp and Punk. I also intend to play some songs from today's Garage bands.

I have a request! I'd like to have some audio clips from you! Please record yourself saying "GarageRockRadio" or "I love Garage Rock!" or something similar. If you have a band, send a clip saying "This is (name) from (band). You are listening to GarageRockRadio!" or similar. You can record an audio clip using Sound Recorder which comes with WindowsXP. It's at Start All Programs Accessories Entertainment Sound Recorder. You can use an audio format of [PCM 22.050 kHz, 8 Bit, Mono] or better. Attach the clip to an email to me at billatGarageRockRadio.com. Thanks!!!

The legal stuff: By sending us your audio clip, you agree to give us an unlimited license to use the audio clip in any manner or form with no expiration date. You agree to give us this license free of charge.

      Garage Videos on YouTube

      Hi, people!

I've been checking out a bunch of videos on YouTube.com lately. I first heard about this video site about 6 months ago and went there to look for Garage clips, but I didn't find any during a quick search. Then someone named Kenny Crane submitted an article to LookingForClues about people on YouTube, called YouTube Stars. Read that article, it's good!

So last night and today, I went back to YouTube and searched for 1960s music videos. I found some good ones! Here's a list of what I found. If you find any broken links here or want to add more links, please do so in the comments for this post. Thanks!

      The VINES - New Video

The Vines have become a popular present-day Garage Band. I've been checking out YouTube.com lately because we just published an article about YouTube Stars over at our other web site, LookingForClues. The article is about the most popular people posting homemade videos at YouTube.com. Read it, you'll really enjoy it!

Anyway, The Vines have a new CD out and this cut, "Anysound", really reminds me of the 1960's Garage Rock that I love so much. So if you are into 60s Garage, check out the video for this song, below. If you can't see it here for some reason, watch it at YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiIboq6XCOg&dpos=2

      Garage Links, 2006

Here's a bunch of links I got by email so far this year.

The 2006 setlist will consist entirely of the kind of high-energy garage grunge that made The Fuzztones notorious in the 80's. Garage Rock on TV

I was checking the stats for GRR last night and noticed that "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" by The Chocolate Watchband is at the top of the list of most downloaded MP3s. It's not surprising, since this song has been on TV a lot lately in an IBM Commercial. You can see the commercial at this German IBM site. Now the song in the commercial is the original version and is done by The Kinks. But the Chocolate Watchband did it Much Better! The vocals snarl more and the guitars are fuzzier. Have a listen on our MP3 page. You might think you're hearing The Rolling Stones, the singer for the Chocolate Watchband did sound like Mick Jagger.

Once, and only once, I recently saw a TV commercial for Target with "Shape of Things To Come" by "Max Frost and his Troopers", the theme song from 1968's "Garage Rock" movie, "
